Witness elegant Geisha honor the traditional dance event 'Asakusa Odori'
The Grandest Occasion for Asakusa Geisha Asakusa Odori
Asakusa Odori marks the most significant event for the Asakusa Geisha. Held annually around autumn, this event is the pinnacle for the Asakusa Geisha. Initiated in 1950 under the name 'Asaji-kai,' the 2023 edition will showcase traditional kiyomoto music like ‘Sanja Matsuri' and customary performances like the 'Asakusa Meibutsu and Sawagi.' With the goal of allowing the public and locals to savor the traditional culture displayed in Ryotei (traditional Japanse-style restaurants), the event is now held once a year.
In 1995, with the co-sponsorship of the Asakusa Kenban (Tokyo Asakusa Geisha Union) and the Asakusa Tourism Federation, and the support of Taito Ward, 'Asakusa Odori' was promoted as a major cultural festival, contributing to the revitalization of the Asakusa Kagai district and the enhancement of the artistic and cultural aspects of Geisha.

A Geisha procession from Kaminarimon to Senso-ji Temple praying for a successful performance
Geisha Dance Performances at Asakusa Jinja Shrine Kaguraden
In 2019 (the first year of the Reiwa era), the Asakusa Kenban (Tokyo Asakusa Geisha Union), in cooperation with the Asakusa Tourism Federation, conducted a ceremonial performance called 'Reiwa no Kotobuki' (Reiwa Commemoration) at Sensoji Temple in Asakusa. This auspicious event included a procession along the Nakamise shopping street and traditional dances at the Asakusa Jinja Shrine Kaguraden. Praying for a successful Asakusa Odori, the procession of Geisha set off from the Kaminarimon Gate, proceeding through the Nakamise shopping street to Sensoji Temple's main hall. Then, the Geisha moved to the Asakusa Shrine Kaguraden to perform ceremonial dances.

Inheriting the skills of the Asakusa Geisha World and Regional Cooperation in Asakusa as a Tourist Destination
The Asakusa Odori Executive Committee was established in 1995 as part of the post-war reconstruction festival, aiming to reintroduce the 'Asaji-kai' into a way to promote the artistic skills of Asakusa Geisha. Its purpose extends beyond preserving the arts of the Asakusa Kagai and now also seeks to create new value, foster community solidarity, and connect with visitors on a deeper level to promote the area as a tourist destination. The committee primarily consists of collaborations between the Ryotei (traditional Japanese-style restaurants) in the Asakusa Kagai, Geisha, Houkan, as well as leaders in traditional Japanese dance, music, tea ceremony, and other cultural disciplines.
